The Nobel Prize Comittee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Corina Machado in Venezuela “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” on Oct 10, 2025 [1].

Maria Machado dedicated the Nobel Peace Prize to President of the USA Donald Trump [2] and gave him the Nobel Peace Prize medal (the prize itself cannot be transferred according to Nobel Prize rules) on Jan 15, 2026 [22]. President Trump has since Sept 2, 2025, been responsible for attacks on boats from Venezuela unlawfully killing at least 115 people in international waters [3]. Trump has previously threatened to invade Venezuela [4].

Maria Machado has also previously called Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu for a military regime change operation in Venezuela [5]. She also supports Israel’s war in Gaza, which has been described as a genocide by various genocides scholars, human rights organizations, and political institutions [6].

Machado also supports the privatization of the state-owned oil reserves in Venezuela by US oil companies [5, 16]. Venezuela is the country with the largest known oil reserves in the world [21].

Machado stems from the Machado family, who owns and manages the steel company Sivensa. Her father Henrique Machado Zuloaga was a leading industrialist and at one point president of Sivensa, which was among the major players after the state steel giant Sidor under his leadership [19, 20]. Therefore, María Corina Machado Parisca is the offspring of two of Venezuela’s most powerful oligarchic families [18]. However, under the Chávez government expropriated or seized several Sivensa plants around 2010 as part of a broader nationalization drive in basic industries [17].

Machado has also been accused of breaking national law as a congress woman after not disclosing the sources of her personal income and founded NGOs which were funded by the USA via the National Endowment for Democracy and USAID. [13, 14]

Machado is also a supporter and signatory of the far-right network „Madrid Charter“ [11, 12] accusing left-wing organizations in Ibero-America as a threat to liberal democracy through communism and drug-trafficking. Other signatories are, eg, former Brazilian president Eduardo Bolsonaro and Italian president Giorgia Meloni.

Peace has different definitions and can be achieved by total domination of one party over the other (cf German “Siegfrieden”, peace by victory) [7] or by mutual understanding and balance of interests (cf German “Verständigungsfrieden”), peace by mutual understanding) [8]. I assume that the Nobel Committee had these definitions in mind when it states:

“Over the course of time the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded in recognition of many different kinds of peace work and concepts of peace.” [9]

The current award of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize seems to apply the former definition of peace, ie peace by total domination. This Nobel Peace Prize will help to replace the current socialist government of Venezuela by a government which aligns with US imperialist and US capitalist interests and whitewash it as “democracy”, “peace”, and “freedom” in the process. This aligns with a long history regime change operations in Latin America by the USA [10].

Regrettably, I prefer the later definition of peace which favors mutual understanding and a balance of interests, where no people are killed in the peace process. If  The Nobel Prize Committee applies a different definition, I recommend abolishing the Nobel Peace Prize because it is a perversion of the humanitarian idea.
