Introduction

Here, I have compiled a list of international news sources and news apps, which I have subjectively assessed as progressive and high-quality (ie, following standards of good journalism and advocating the public good, ie democratic ecosocialism) based on following their reporting on enviromental politics (ie, climate, biodiversity), and middle east politics (ie, Gaza), which are the topics I am most familiar with. The quality and displayed progressive values of the news sources may depend on the topic. For example, the same news source may advocate for the protection of the environment and human rights for LGBT, but at the same time show a strong pro-israeli spin regarding middle east politics covering up the genocide in Gaza (eg, Der Spiegel, Die Blätter).

In general, I recommend following subject matter experts on social media, which have demonstrated integrity (ie, no rudeness, personal insults, no logical fallacies, such as ad absurdum/ad hominem attacks, openness to constructive feedback, friendly engaging with good-faith followers). Their shared posts and links are a good starting point to explore a topic. The list of progressive news sources below provide a good variety of (progressive) perspectives to combine the information to create the larger picture (eg, how is an event framed, what information is missing). Finally, I also recommend reading mainstream or even right-wing media. Usually these new sources are still correct on the basic events (eg, whether a bomb has exploded, or if a politician has resigned), but you will also understand the spin, framing, and also some untruths which are published, which give a good understanding of the intentions of those in power and the wealthy. To understand a topic in depth, reading books is still strongly recommended, to understand theoretical concepts and the larger context of a topic (eg, climate science, playbook of the fossil fuel industry, modern monetary theory, history of the middle east).

Finally, to state the obvious, to be well-informed, critical thinking, ie combing various sources of information and identifying conflicting information and framing, is essential.
