Interview with Bill Gates on the ARD/Tagesthemen on 2020-04-12 – Philanthrop or investor? – Wilmar Igl

DE Multi-Milliardär Bill Gates gab am 2020-04-12 in der öffentlich-rechtlichen Nachrichtensendung “Tagesthemen” ein 9-minütiges (!) Interview [1], in dem er seine Sicht auf die Covid-19 Pandemie und die Verfügbarkeit von Impfstoffen darlegte. Bill Gates hat durch seine langjährige Tätigkeit im Bereich Globale Gesundheit und seinen engen Austausch mit Experten wahrscheinlich eine informierte Meinung, welche von gewissem öffentlichen Interesse ist. Seine doppelte Rolle als Philanthrop und Investor gibt ihm jedoch die perfekte Tarnung, um Technologien oder Produkte zu unterstützen, in die er investiert hat. Ihm so viel Sendezeit im öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehen zu geben, ohne auf seinen fundamentalen Interessenskonflikt explizit hinzuweisen ist verantwortungsloser Journalismus [see also 2]!

Desweiteren erweckt Bill Gates den Eindruck, dass er die hohe Nachfrage nach einem Impfstoff dazu benutzen möchte, um Druck auf Regierungen auszuüben, die Entwicklung und Produktion des Impfstoffs zu subventionieren, um sich ein (Erst)Zugriffsrecht zu sichern, da ansonsten der Impfstoff nur oder zuerst dem Produktionsland (USA?) verkauft wird [4,5]. Dabei ist anzunehmen, dass der erzielte Gewinn vor allem dem Hersteller/Investoren zufließen wird. Auf diese Weise würden – wie im üblich im neo-liberalen Kapitalismus – Kosten sozialisiert und Gewinne privatisiert.

Schliesslich ist noch zu beachten, dass die Bill & Melinda Gates Stiftung als nicht demokratisch legitimierte Organisation der zweit-grösste Spender an die WHO nach der USA ist und an Treffen von nationalen Regierungen zur globalen Gesundheitspolitik teilnimmt [6,7,8].

EN Multi-Billionaire Bill Gates gave a 9-minute (!) interview on the Covid-19 pandemic and the availability of vaccines on the public TV news show “Tagesthemen” on 2020-04-12 [1] totally ignoring his double agenda as a philanthrop and investor. Bill Gates has been active int the field of Global Health over many years, and, therefore, probably has an educated opinion, which is of a certain public interest. However, his role as a philanthrop gives him the perfect cover to push forward technologies or products he has invested in. Giving him so much time on public television without making his fundamental conflict of interest explicit is irresponsible journalism [see also 2]!

In addition, Bill Gates gives the impression, that he wants to use the high demand for a vaccine to put pressure on governments to subsidize the development and production a vaccine to secure (first) access, because otherwise the vaccine may be only or firstly sold to the country of production (USA?) [4, 5]. Thereby, it can be assumed that the gained profit will primarily benefit the company/investors. This way costs will be – as usual in a neo-liberal capitalist system – socialized while profit is privatized.

Finally one should keep in mind, that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as a not democratic legitimised Organisation is the second largest donor to the WHO after the USA and participates in meetings of national governments on global health politics [6,7,8].
