Learnings from the destruction of La cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

I think the destruction of La cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris [¹] is a appropriate metaphor for the state of our biosphere and an illustration of “Our house is on fire”. It also demonstrates that nothing is built for eternity, neither buildings nor political systems!

While I acknowledge the unique cultural value of Notre Dame, investing 100s of millions of euros on re-building Notre Dame while the cathedral of our biosphere is in flames seems to me like total denial and misguided sentimentalism. Are lives or buildings more important?

As peace scientist Markus Weingardt pointed out, the eagerness of billionaires to donate the first and/or the most to rebuilding Notre Dame while ignoring giving money to other existential problems, such as climate breakdown, has to do with the publicity which can be gained with this highly emotional topic [2]. My guess is also, re-building Notre Dame poses a far lower risk to their wealth compared to facing the real problems of humankind.
