Int. Extinction Rebellion Week, Berlin, Oct 7 – A personal summary

My personal highlights:

  • Active participation in the meeting “re:claim THE HOUSE” including member of parliament of various parties (CDU, SPD, Grüne, FDP, Linke) and various climate movements (Fridays/Scientists For Future, Extinction Rebellion, Ende Gelände,…) including Prof. Volker Quaschning and Dr. Gregor Hagedorn.   • Camping in the “Climate Camp” in front of the parliament (Reichstag) and house of chancellor (Bundeskanzleramt)
  • Outreach action at the Brandenburger Tor with banners, posters and stickers which I had designed and provided to overall 6 XR activists
  • Blocking of the Ministry for the Environment in Stresemannstraße with several hundred other XR activists

My personal “summary in numbers”:

  • Dates: Fri, 2019-10-11 to, Fri, 2019-10-18
  • Travel: 2 x 22h train & bus ride Uppsala – Berlin – Uppsala
  • Luggage: ~40 kg, including camping stuff, activism stuff (banners, posters, sticks, ropes, tape,…), books, …
  • Accommodation:  2.5 days Climate Camp + 4.5 days Hostel
  • Actions:
    • Fri, Oct 11: Bus ride reading Staffan Laestadius “Klimatet och välfärden” (50%)
    • Sat, Oct 12:
      • 12pm-16pm: Blockade of the  Federal Ministry of Environment/Stresemannstraße
      • 16pm-18pm: Action at Mall of Berlin, incl sit-in
      • 18pm-20pm: Action at Potsdamer Platz with over 100 activists in heatmap-coloured dresses representing the increase in global surface temperature over the last 100 years, incl.  songs, and speeches
    • Sun, Oct 13:
      • 11pm -15pm: Blockade of the  Federal Ministry of Environment/Stresemannstraße with  support of activists closed in by the police
      • 16pm-18pm: Final Assembly of the Climate Camp
    • Mon, Oct 14
      • 10am-13pm: Organization of Week 2# Protest on lawn before parliament
      • 13pm-18pm: Preparation of Actions of Week #2
    • Tue, Oct 15
      • 9am-12am: Outreach action (organized by myself :-)) at the Brandenburger Tor as tourist hotspot in front of the US embassy with 6 activists, large banner (3m x 1m), 3 posters, and 2500 stickers  (a few hundred distributed!) showing the Keeling Curve and  message to “Jetzt die Kurve kriegen!” (~ “Bend the Carbon Curve!”). The XR message is now presumably part of several hundred of holiday fotos which are shared across the world! At the end of the action several hundred stickers with the Keeling Curve (“Jetzt die Kurve kriegen!”) were distributed and used as conversation starters, often leading to engaging discussions!
      • 12pm-17pm: Outreach action at the World Clock, Alexanderplatz, as tourist hotspot, with ritual action, music, acrobatics, banners, posters, stickers, flyers. At the end of the day ~1250 stickers with the Keeling Curve (“Jetzt die Kurve kriegen!”) were distributed, used as conversation starters, often leading to engaging discussions!
      • 18pm-21pm: Prepared action for Wednesday, combining a flyer by the Nazi resistance group “Die Weiße Rose” with the Extinction Rebellion message (not implemented, due to concerns by other activists, that the message would be misinterpreted in the media).

      • 8am-10am: Blogging, Organization
      • 14pm-16pm: Active participation in the meeting “re:claim THE HOUSE” including member of parliament of various parties (CDU, SPD, Grüne, FDP, Linke) and various climate movements (Fridays/Scientists For Future, Extinction Rebellion, Ende Gelände,…) including Prof. Volker Quaschning and Dr. Gregor Hagedorn.       • 10am-15am: Distribution of stickers (Keeling Curve, Bend the Carbon Curve, remaining ~1250 copies) in small shops in the working class, migration background district “Wedding”
    • Friday, Oct 18
      • Trip back home reading Laestadius “Klimatet och välfärden”
  • General:
    • Wonderful, meaningful meetings and discussions with other activists and friends in Berlin
    • Wonderful walks through Berlin in beautiful autumn weather, and people watching in fancy cafés in the Prenzlauer Berg
