Are we on the Highway to Hell? – A classic song re-interpreted.

I recently re-discovered this all-time classic rock song which was first published in 1979, and – just for fun – re-interpreted it in the context of our current ecological crisis.

Highway to Hell

by AC/DC

Living easy, living free
Convenient living with a high-level of consumerism and global neoliberalism …
Season ticket on a one-way ride
is over-using the earth’s resources just for single use.
Asking nothing, leave me be
We are not questioning this lifestyle anymore, and prefer the dull convenience of consumerism and ignorance.
Taking everything in my stride
We are consuming all resources in our aggressive activism …
Don’t need reason, don’t need rhyme
which cannot be justified by reason and is not in harmony with nature.
Ain’t nothing I would rather do
Consumerism and activism have become the ultimate goals…
Going down, party time
bringing down our human existence to low levels of sheer hedonism.
My friends are gonna be there too
We think that we don’t have to blame ourselves because everybody is following the same lifestyle.
I’m on the highway to hell
We are on the direct way to mass extinction …
On the highway to hell
the direct way to mass extinction ….
Highway to hell
the direct way to mass extinction.
I’m on the highway to hell
We are on the direct way to mass extinction.

No stop signs, speed limit
There are no rules and limits to our greed anymore…
Nobody’s gonna slow me down
All critical voices and forces have been enslaved by the system.
Like a wheel, gonna spin it
We are repeating our damaging habits over and over again driven by their own momentum.
Nobody’s gonna mess me around
Nobody is holding us responsible anymore or is questioning our authority.
Hey Satan, paid my dues
We think we have the right to consume
Playing in a rocking band
because we work hard and earn lots of money.
Hey mama, look at me
We are living a life that
I’m on my way to the promised land, whoo!
our ancestors could only dream about.
I’m on the highway to hell
We are on the direct way to mass extinction …
Highway to hell
the direct way to mass extinction …
I’m on the highway to hell
We are on the direct way to mass extinction …
Highway to hell
the direct way to mass extinction …

Don’t stop me
We do not even want to stop and change our behavior.
I’m on the highway to hell.
We are on the direct way to mass extinction …
On the highway to hell
the direct way to mass extinction …
I’m on the highway to hell
We are on the direct way to mass extinction .
On the highway
the direct way …
Yeah, highway to hell
the direct way to mass extinction …
I’m on the highway to hell
We are on the direct way to mass extinction …
Highway to hell
the direct way to mass extinction …
Highway to hell
the direct way to mass extinction …
And I’m going down all the way
We are going into mass extinction.
Whoa! I’m on the highway to hell.
We are on the direct way to mass extinction.
